How was your weekend?

I spent some of the weekend building ‘The Great Wave of Kanagawa’. The great thing that the LEGO Group added to this set was a podcast where you got to learn the art piece’s history while building it!

Yup, you heard that right – this legendary artist was not only ahead of his time in terms of his printmaking techniques but also paved the way for the modern-day #manga industry.

But wait, there’s more! Here are three other little-known facts about Hokusai and his iconic artwork:

Hokusai wasn’t always known as “Hokusai”. In fact, he went through over 30 different names throughout his lifetime, each reflecting a different period or artistic style in his career.

“The Great Wave of Kanagawa” wasn’t actually the first in the series of “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”. It was the 36th and final print in the series, depicting various landscapes featuring Japan’s most famous mountain.

The image of the great wave has become so ingrained in popular culture that it has even inspired a #lego set! That’s right – you can now build your very own version of the Great Wave using those beloved plastic bricks.

To me, the painting represents the raw power of nature and the human spirit’s resilience in the face of adversity. The towering wave and the brave fishermen struggling against it are both awe-inspiring and humbling, reminding us of the fragility of life and the need to persevere in the face of challenges.
