The future of work is leaning toward Agentless opportunities, while the future of AI is becoming Agent driven applications.

Workers are showing signs that they want to be free of companies, who would rather lay them off, than invest in them, or help upskill them. These same people do not want to work for leaders who may not line up with their beliefs, and values, or appreciate the expertise, that they bring. These individuals get more from doing projects, work, or niche work essentially becoming a freelancer. As a freelancer, they would drive their work, own their hours and time, and in the end bring value in their own way. These niche workers or knowledge experts are in turn ‘agentless’.

How can agentless work survive?

Companies will always have a need to pull in outside workers or firms to get the work done.

An agentless worker can provide expertise and insights where a larger company just doesn’t have the time to find this specific person, with this particular skill set or talent.

This will continue due to the continued talent shortages, and worker shortages, and not limited to the fact that layoffs around the world are not helping either of these situations.

Agentless work provides the client, aka  ‘hiring agent’ with the ability to bring on expertise, or niche talent faster while still allowing businesses to concentrate on their core competencies.

Do we see types of niche work like this now?

Yes, take nursing for example where you have “Travel Nurses” that work where they’re needed and get paid more as they then are in a ‘supply and demand’ situation. I am seeing more skilled industries taking this same approach.

So how does [Agentless work] tie into [Agent-driven applications]?

It starts with an exciting story about #people. We as people do not like change, or we do like change as long as “we” don’t have to change. People can be funny that way.

However, that is the exact reason #ai, #automation, and overall most new technology usually have a hard time driving continued successful projects, and or long-term engagements. Agent-driven or Embedded AI will be a driving force soon, and we are already seeing a cultural shift around it. We will first see the smart apps, where embedded AI will be used in limited yet helpful ways. These guide rails will be great for freelance or niche workers and many are already seeing wins. Those who use the technology as an extension of their own abilities will gain extra benefits from using it. The key word to remember here is agent-driven AI is here, and just like mobile apps, SaaS offerings, and all the metadata in-between.

It’s going to get interesting.
