Nigel Scott, has an interesting view here which gives more visibility around where I think the CAIO – Chief AI Officer should sit within a company or organization.

I personally think that the CAIO role should be non-hierarchical and be the first fractional role that every company or enterprise should look to bring in. This fractional role can work at every level and work to gain feedback from the current hierarchical structure to help and drive the understanding in each area while being a positive influence and confidant to those leaders who need a better understanding of these new innovations we find ourselves working with.

You want this to be fractional for a number of reasons:

1. Ease of use – tag in when needed

2. They don’t make CAIOs the same and they are new. So a fractional approach can save you from a risky hire.

3. If the fractional person works and the value is seen, feel free to offer a full time role. Its better to find a fit, and one that drives innovation along with passion.

4. Fractional CAIOs, at least those I know and company’s who are building this model out are working with many CAIOs, and doing so with support, collaboration, and community at its core.

5. Hire the passion, find the Brave Space leader who will invigorate and maybe shake the tree a bit. You may just find exactly what you are looking for when you have open and brave conversations.

“Innovation is not a safe space, but it is a brave one we can all do together!” 😁
