“Institutions will try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution.” ― Clay Shirky
This quote applies to many organizations struggling with disruption and digital transformation. They invest in new technologies to solve their problems but fail to embrace the necessary changes in their culture, processes, and mindset. Some seem to treat #automation, and #AI as a silver bullet that will magically solve all their problems without questioning their assumptions and biases.
However, the real value of automation and the same could be said for AI, is not in replacing human labor but in augmenting, enabling, and engaging it. Automation can help us do more with less, reduce errors, improve quality, speed up delivery, and free up time for creativity, innovation, and strategic thinking. But to achieve these benefits, we need to rethink how we work, learn, and collaborate. We need to be open to new ideas, experiment with new methods, and embrace a growth mindset that values learning over perfection.
Come join me in a Brave Space, where no one is perfect, to fail is a learning tool that you use to create stairs to reach even higher goals, and you will always have the opportunity to upskill yourself on this digital journey.
That’s where the Shirky principle comes into play. Instead of preserving the problem, we need to challenge it, question it, and redefine it. We need to see disruption and digital transformation as opportunities to create new value, solve new problems, and engage with others in new ways. We need to shift from a reactive to a proactive mindset, from a fixed to a flexible be the change you want to see mindset.
Automation can be entrepreneurial much like a new Start-up. In general, Startups are seen to create new jobs, roles, or products. In this Automation is not a threat to our jobs or our institutions, but a catalyst for our growth and innovation. It’s up to us to embrace it and use it wisely. Let’s be the change we want to see and let’s disrupt ourselves before others do it for us.
