Daily we are all seeing a lot of news around layoffs, employees let go, and people just being unhappy. I started to wonder… Why is this? In a world that is becoming more digital, and with people being upskilled to become more digitally savvy.
What’s the issue?
One story over at the World Economic Forum caught my eye in hopes of an answer. In the article, ill tag in the comments below called “This country has the highest number of people planning to quit their jobs”
It states:
– Two-fifths of people are unhappy at work and are considering leaving their job in the near future, according to a new survey by McKinsey.
– Lack of career development and inadequate pay, together with uncaring bosses, are cited as the main reasons by respondents in six countries.
– It comes as official statistics show there are high numbers of unfilled job positions across many of the world’s biggest economies.
Now the article has some great stats. But it doesn’t talk about how to fix, this or even where to start. So being in the automation space and working in it daily. I find that maybe #Automation can help here just by looking at the points above.
1. Unhappy people – These are likely people doing highly repetitive and unmeaningful work. When people like us all perform work that they do not find value in it. That in turn becomes stressful work. So let’s automate the stress away from those people. No?
2. Lack of career development, inadequate pay, and uncaring bosses! – Ok, agreed we have all seen this or experienced it in one-way shape, or form. That automation can play a role in promoting and teaching more digitally savvy practitioners. You can upskill your employees and help them to develop themselves, which will increase their pay, and shows when picked by management that they indeed care about their employees’ development. In turn, the business gets a more knowledgeable worker who can now help or promote the company’s already ongoing #digtialtransformation.
3. Lastly, there are unfulfilled jobs everywhere! Looking at this again through an automation scope, this cannot be solved by automation, yet. The issue with many jobs is the posters ask for the moon and expect to get it. Many applicants out there think I don’t have enough experience or why would they hire me. Although most of that is a personal and very human dilemma. We can still strive to do better and not ask for someone with 14 years of experience when 4 may be needed.
What I do ask is as automation helps to be an #agentofchange, within the culture of companies and businesses we find our employees, coworkers, and leaders are becoming more #digitalsavvy. Let’s embrace this change even if it’s a #mindsetchange and see just how many innovative and forward-thinking jobs we can create.
